HIGHLIGHTS
4 MATCHES
Morocco
VS Croatia
The FIFA World Cup 2018 runners-up Croatia faced Morocco
in their world cup opener and both the teams had their defences on top hence it
was again a goalless draw, in fact the third in 24 hours. Three of the last
four matches at this winter’s tournament have been goalless draws, more
goalless draws than there were in the previous 73 matches in the competition
combined. Morocco have proved themselves as a difficult side to beat as they
only lost 2 of their 41 games over last 3 years while Croatia extended their
unbeaten streak to 7 games.
Germany
VS Japan
Yet another surprise at this year’s tournament, Japan
stunned Germany with a late comeback in their World Cup opener, with goals from
Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano seeing them win 2-1 at the Khalifa International
Stadium. Japan have never previously beaten their European opponents but they
capitalised on the errors made by the Germans, in terms of missed chances and
loopholes in their defence. Both the teams have been denied 1 goal each for off
sides but in the end Germany was not able to find even an equalizer. Striker
Thomas Muller said after the game: "It is ludicrous that we are here with
a defeat. We played a good game over long periods of time but a game is also
marked by the chances that you convert into goals."
Spain
VS Costa Rica
Spain took care of business very well as they just
thrashed Costa Rica for 7-0, coming from 6 different players and showed complete
dominance over the game setting a new record for Most goals scored by Spain in a single world cup match.
Since winning the world cup in 2010 Spain had a bad run
in the 2018 world cup where they were defeated by hosts Russia in the round of
16 and in 2014 they didn’t even got past the group stage .But this years
Squad is the youngest squad at this World Cup with 9
players coming from powerhouse clubs like FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Manager
Luis Enrique thinks that his roster has the capability of returning Spain to
world cup Glory.
Belgium
Vs Canada
The goal scored by Michy Batshuayi in the 44th
minute, was the difference in this game. Canada had several chances even a
penalty which was awarded to Canada star Alphonso Davies was awarded a penalty
kick after a video review for a handball by Belgium in the box but Thibaut
Courtois the Belgian goalkeeper showed his full experience with stopping the
goal with a full stretch dive denying Canada their first ever goal in world cup.
UPCOMING
MATCH PREVIEWS
SWITZERLAND VS CAMEROON
Buoyed by a more-than-satisfactory qualifying campaign,
Switzerland will be looking to build on their recent success at the FIFA World
Cup Qatar 2022.The Nati have featured in three World Cup quarter-finals in
1934, 1938 and 1954, so it has been a while since they reached the last eight.
Despite most recently making it as far as the Round of 16 in 2018 and 2014,
their journey came to an end at that stage on both occasions. Murat
Yakin’s side will be keen to lay the foundations for a successful tournament by
winning their opening match against their African opponents.
Reaching the World Cup quarter-finals is also Cameroon’s
best result to date. Yet the knockout stages have remained frustratingly
elusive for the Indomitable Lions since that successful run at Italy 1990, with
their last five campaigns coming to a premature end in the group stages. As
Rigobert Song’s team prepare to go again in Qatar in their quest to finally
contest another knockout game at the World Cup finals, their encounter with
Switzerland could provide a good indication of their chances of success.
URUGUAY
VS SOUTH KOREA
In a repeat of their round-of-16 encounter at South
Africa 2010, Uruguay and Korea Republic will get the ball rolling in Group H of
the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.La Celeste go into the tournament with a squad
featuring a mix of iconic figures, such as Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani,
Fernando Muslera, Martin Caceres and Diego Godin, and young starlets looking to
help their national team exceed expectations, like they did so memorably in
2010. According to FIFA’s official records, Uruguay has won the World Cup two
times in their history.
South Korea, on the other hand, have qualified for every
edition of the World Cup since 1986. Their best run ever was in 2002 when they
finished fourth.
PORTUGAL
VS GHANA
Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal are scheduled to open
their FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign against Ghana on Thursday, 24 November 2022
at the Stadium 974 in Ras Abu Aboud. Portugal and Ghana are in the Group H
alongside Uruguay and South Korea. In the FIFA 2018 World Cup, Portugal were
knocked out in the Round of 16 stage after losing 1-2 against Uruguay. On the
other hand, Ghana did not qualify for the last World Cup and marked their 4th
World Cup qualification this year.
Considering Portugal‘s team riches, this World Cup will
be different, and they should be compared to other major nations. However,
because there is less debate about Portugal and their superstar has taken the
headlines, Manchester United announced yesterday that they had terminated
Ronaldo’s contract on a mutual basis after his shocking interview. However,
this should not hide the fact that Portugal will be a bit surprising in this
tournament.
Ghana‘s 2-0 win over Switzerland should have encouraged them they are capable of pulling off another upset. The Black Star will attempt to cash on this victory.
BRAZIL VS SERBIA
Brazil will aim to start the FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign
on a strong note when they take on Serbia at the Lusail Stadium on Thursday.
Brazil
enter the 2022 FIFA World Cup as favourites to win the trophy for the sixth
time. The manager is dealing with several selection issues ahead of the game at
Lusail Stadium.Perhaps Tite’s most difficult decision will be in his forward
line: Richarlison started Brazil’s warm-up triumph over Tunisia as the centre
forward. He might dethrone Gabriel Jesus, while Raphinha’s two goals in that
game may be enough to earn him a starting spot.
On the other hand, Serbia reached the FIFA World Cup 2022
by topping Group A in the UEFA leg of the qualifiers. The Eagles did not lose a
single game and dropsWITZERLAND ped points on just two occasions in eight outings. And
Dragan Stojkovic’s men come into the group stage on the back of a six-match
unbeaten run
